Yudha Kusuma Putera

Yudha Kusuma Putera or Fehung was born in 1987 in Magelang (Central Java). He studied photography at Faculty of Recorded Media Arts, Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta. He is a member of MES 56, an artist group, in Yogyakarta.

Fehung's photo, image and video installation questions the catastrophe of waste management globally and specifically what happens in Yogyakarta. He refers to the incident of developed countries who like to export their waste to countries in Southeast Asia, but he also questions the management of trash can (Tempat Pembuangan Sampah Terpadu (Integrated Landfill): TPST) in Piyungan, a south area of Yogyakarta.TPST, which was built in mid-1990s, has to accommodate waste from Bantul, Sleman and Yogyakarta regencies with an average amount of 734 tons per day. TPST in Piyungan then became a mountain of waste, its surface covered with dirt and grass. It is an alternative to opening up the new land next to it which will then become a new mountain of waste. Waste is a common problem on a global scale, starting from the management that is closest to our own lives.

This work shows how animals such as cows and birds live in landfill. Photographs and images are combined into a video works that create intersections between consumerism, waste, scavenging and also landscape.
